Thursday, July 13, 2017 -- Upon arrival to Terceira Airport, you are met by our local representative and transferred to your hotel in Angra do Heroismo. Terceira, which means "third", was the third island in the Azores to be discovered by the Portuguese, and is also the third largest in size. Stroll the streets of Angra do Heroismo, founded in the 16th century, and feel transported back in time. This museum-quality city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s snug harbor is protected by a volcanic cone which made Angra a major staging area for European ships bringing back wealth from the New World. Climb the hill behind the pretty public gardens for a grand view of the city and the volcanic cone of Monte Brasil. Overnight at your hotel in Angra do Heroismo.

Friday, July 14, 2017 -- After breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide and driver in the hotel lobby for a full day tour of Terceira. Depart along the south coast to Praia da Vitoria via Porto Judeu, a small fishing village. Then, stop at So Sebastiao and its 15th century parish church. Nearby is an "imperio", a small chapel that is characteristic of the towns of the towns of the Azores. Praia da Vitoria is a charming town with a main square and a pedestrian shopping street. After free time for lunch, take the mountain road to Serra do Cume for a view of the rolling green fields bordered by stone walls and hydrangeas, with the harbor of Praia in the distance. Continue to Algar do Carvao, a huge lava tube about 300 feet long with stalactites and stalagmites. Then, visit Biscoitos on the north coast to see the natural lava swimming pools and to visit the wine museum. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Sunday, July 16, 2017 -- After breakfast at your hotel, you are transferred to the airport to board your flight to Faial. Upon arrival to Horta Airport, you are met and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Enjoy a welcome dinner at your hotel and overnight.
Horta Hotel is located in the old Azorean town of Horta, the newly-renovated Hotel Horta offers views of Pico Island. It features rooms with balconies, a large garden and an outdoor pool. Horta’s rooms are decorated in neutral colors, and have wooden furniture. Each of the air-conditioned rooms has a cable TV and a private bathroom with a hairdryer.
Monday, July 17, 2017 -- After breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide in the lobby for a half-day tour of Faial. Travel along the mountain road overlooking the Valley of Flamengos towards Caldeira, the highest point on the island. Continue north to Capelinhos, site of the last volcanic eruption in the Azores, which resulted in the immigration of many islanders to North America. Visit the nearby museum which documents the eruption. In the early afternoon, you are returned to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight at your hotel in Faial.

Wednesday, July 19, 2017 -- Breakfast at your hotel. Enjoy a 30-minute ferry crossing to the island of Pico. Meet your driver and guide at the ferry dock in Madalena on Pico for a full day tour of the second largest island in the Azores. The island is dominated by the massive bulk of Pico Mountain. Islanders make good use of the black volcanic rocks to build houses and walls in a distinctive fashion. Pico was once an important whaling station, and there is a museum showing how islanders took to the sea in open boats to pursue these leviathans. Fortunately, tourists are now the only people who go to sea to see the many species of whales around the island. An unusual feature of Pico is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of acres of vineyards encircled by small, black volcanic rock walls to protect them from the salt winds and to collect extra heat. A local fortified wine, Vedrelho, is once again being produced from these grapes. In the afternoon, return to Madalena for the ferry trip back to Horta. Overnight at your hotel on Faial. Friday, July 21, 2017 -- After breakfast, you are transferred to the port to board your ferry to the island of Sao Jorge. Upon arrival, journey towards Ponta dos Rosais on the most western tip of the island, with a magnificent view over Faial and Pico Islands. Returning from Ponta dos Rosais, visit a cheese factory to see how the famous St. Jorge cheese is made. Continue to the north side of the island, passing by Beira, Toledo and Sto. António villages to reach Norte Grande with views over Faja do Ouvidor, a low-lying area leading to the sea that is characteristic of the island. Then, proceed to Norte Pequeno and Faja dos Cubres, with magnificent views over the north side of the island and its coastline. The next stop is in the picturesque village of Manadas to visit Sta. Bárbara Church, one of the most magnificent churches on the island. Continues on to the Urzelina, where the church tower is all that remains of an ancient church which was buried by the eruption of Pico da Esperança in 1808. Saturday, July 22, 2017 -- After breakfast, you are transferred to the airport to board your flight to Sao Miguel, the largest and most geographically diverse of the Azores. Upon arrival in Ponta Delgada, you are met and transferred to your hotel. Ponta Delgada is the largest city and the capital of the Azores. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Sunday, July 23, 2017 -- After breakfast at your hotel, experience a full day tour of Furnas. Just outside Ponta Delgada, the rural life of Sao Miguel dominates. Depart along the south road, passing the village of Lagoa for a viewpoint at Caloura. Continue to Vila Franca, once the capital, for a coffee break (not included). Upon arrival to the Furnas region, visit the lake, the hot springs, and see the holes in the ground where meals are cooked using natural steam. Continue to the charming town of Furnas to enjoy free time for lunch. Visit the beautiful botanical gardens begun in the 18th century with the opportunity to swim in the hot springs. Cross the island to the north coast, stopping for a fine view of both the south and north coasts from an interior highland. On the way, you will visit a tea plantation, the only one in Europe. Return to your hotel in the evening for an overnight stay.
Monday, July 24, 2017 -- After breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide and driver in the lobby and head west to one of the most awesome sights in the Azores, the twin Caldeira Lakes of Sete Cidades. The view from "Vista do Rei" (King’s View) high on the crater’s rim is stunning. Far below, next to the lakes, is the pretty village of Sete Cidades (Seven Cities). Descend into the Caldeira to visit the town. Before returning to Ponta Delgada, stop at the pineapple plantation. The Azores is not warm enough to grow pineapples, but they thrive in greenhouses.
